ADVANTAGES
Soft gels are the gold standard for fish oil, vitamin D, vitamin E, CoQ10, and other oil-based or oil-soluble ingredients. The format protects sensitive actives and delivers them in a single, easy-to-swallow dose.
Soft gels are sealed shut after filling, preventing oxygen exposure that degrades sensitive ingredients. This is especially important for omega-3s and other oils that turn rancid in lesser packaging.
Soft gel shells dissolve faster than tablets or hard capsules, releasing actives sooner in the digestive process. The right choice when bioavailability and onset speed matter.
SPECIFICATIONS
The most common questions from brand owners are about sizes, materials, fill capacity, and minimums. Here is the short answer for each.
Round, Oval, Oblong
Shape Options
Standard round and oval soft gels are easiest to swallow. Custom shapes available for brand differentiation on higher-volume runs.
Bovine or Fish
Gelatin Source
Standard bovine-derived gelatin is most common. Fish-derived gelatin available for kosher or pescatarian positioning. Plant-based softgel alternatives are in development but limited in active compatibility.
Up to 1500mg fill
Fill Capacity
Soft gels accommodate a wide fill range. Standard fish oil and vitamin D soft gels sit around 500-1000mg. Higher fills possible based on shell capacity.
Low MOQ
Minimums & Set-Up
Low order minimums and no set-up fees. Soft gel runs typically have a slightly higher MOQ than tablets due to encapsulation tooling. Scoped during discovery.
MANUFACTURING
Soft gel encapsulation runs on rotary die machines that form, fill, and seal the capsule in a single pass. Every batch goes through in-process fill weight verification, seam integrity testing, and finished-product testing for identity, purity, potency, and contaminants before release. Drying and tumbling happen on-site, so your private label soft gels ship customer-ready.

Some health categories work better in soft gels than others. Here are the ones where this format is the natural choice.
Quick answers to the questions brand owners ask before they commit.
Plant-based soft gel alternatives exist but have limited compatibility with the types of actives soft gels are typically used for (oils, oil-soluble vitamins). For vegan positioning on these actives, vegetarian capsules with oil-fill are usually the better option. Talk to our team about your specific formulation.
Soft gels are sealed under controlled conditions to minimize oxygen exposure. We also add antioxidants (mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract) to oil fills to extend stability. Finished product testing includes peroxide value (PV) and anisidine value (AV) to verify freshness on release.
Most soft gel formulations have an 18 to 24-month shelf life depending on the actives. Fish oil and other PUFAs have shorter intrinsic stability than fat-soluble vitamins. Stability testing for longer claims (36 months) available on request.
Yes. Enteric soft gels bypass stomach acid and release in the small intestine. Common for fish oil to prevent reflux and fishy aftertaste, and for some probiotic and enzyme formulations.
Soft gels can be manufactured in a wide range of colors using both natural and FD&C-approved colorants. Clear, amber, and opaque finishes available. Color choice often signals the active inside (yellow for vitamin D, amber for omega-3) and can be customized to your brand.
