PRIVATE LABEL DESIGN SERVICES
Technical requirements for clients who are providing their own label artwork. Following these guidelines keeps your project on the 3-to-4-week production timeline and avoids rework.
Customers who have their own designer or agency can supply finished label artwork directly. We'll review it against these technical requirements before sending it to print.
Most rework delays come from artwork that does not meet one of the five requirements below. Have your designer review this page before they start the file.
REQUIREMENT 1
Our label templates provide the visual layout of your finished label. They are not optional. Changing or removing the template from the art file causes rework and extends your timeline.
The templates we provide show: where graphic elements vs. text can appear within the label area; what font sizes will print legibly and meet FDA regulatory requirements; what standardized information must be included and where it must be positioned relative to other elements.
Your designer must use our template as the base file.
REQUIREMENT 2
To work on your label and prepare it for our printer, we need to receive your artwork in a vector format that our design team can re-open, edit, and resize without quality loss.
Accepted file formats: .eps (encapsulated PostScript) or .ai (Adobe Illustrator).
Do not send .pdf or .jpeg files. Those file types are not editable in our production workflow and will be rejected.
REQUIREMENT 3
There are two color formats: RGB and CMYK. Our printers require all files be set up as CMYK, which stands for the four primary colors of pigment: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. These four inks are mixed in varying proportions to produce full-color print output.
RGB (red, green, blue) is used for digital displays: monitors, cameras, TV screens. RGB color values will not print accurately on a physical label.
If your files are set up in RGB, convert them to CMYK before sending. Color drift between RGB and CMYK can be significant and we cannot guarantee on-screen colors will match printed output if files arrive in RGB.
REQUIREMENT 4
An art file is made up of many individual elements: fonts, graphics, logos, embedded images, and color swatches. All of these elements must be packaged together for the file to be editable and printable on our end.
Most design programs (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign) have a Package or Collect for Output function that bundles all linked assets, fonts, and color profiles into a single delivery folder. Use that function before sending. If anything is missing (a linked image, a font, a color swatch), the file cannot go to print.
REQUIREMENT 5
Outlining fonts converts text into vector objects. This means the text no longer requires the font file to be installed on another computer in order to display correctly.
Pros of outlining: appearance is preserved exactly when the file is sent to print. Eliminates the need to send your font files alongside the artwork.
Cons of outlining: any text edits required after the fact must be made by you and the file resent. Outlined text cannot be edited as text anymore.
If you're confident your label is final, outline fonts. If you anticipate revisions, leave fonts live and include the font files in your packaged delivery.
Our designers can review your file before submission and flag any technical issues. Catching problems before they hit print saves you days on the timeline.
